Rupert dropped Biology textbooks on the table. Geez, that was heavy, he made inaudible mumble. Two or three students in that lab gave him a 'why' look, since he was the only person who brought more than one textbook.
But Rupert gave them a chill look. Rupert is Rupert. He wouldn't feel like being himself if he only bring one textbook to classes. It's just doesn't seems enough for him.
Just a few seconds before Mrs. Schwarz entered lab, a girl with big cream sweater came in. She took a seat beside Rupert, because that was the only empty space left. There was nothing special about that cold-all-the-time girl, but what surpising was: when she came in, Rupert realized he was not the only student on earth who doesn't feel enough when he only brings one textbook into classes.
That girl brought three textbooks plus one notebook, and it seemed heavier than Rupert's.
She put her books on the table. There was a short freezing moment when she saw Rupert. To be honest, it was a combination of dejavu and slow-mo.
Rupert looked back at her. That's when she realized she should say something to break the awkwardness between them.
"Um, hey, I'm Rachel," she offered her hand for a handshake.
"Rupert." They shook hands.
"Nice to meet you, Rupert," Rachel sat down. And as she took a moment positioning herself, Rupert adjusted his glasses while taking a glance at Rachel.
"So you bring three textbooks too?" Rupert asked.
At that moment, Rachel also realized that she wasn't the only student on earth who doesn't feel enough when she only brings one textbooks to classes. She always lend another one at the library, carrying it as often as possible, just in case she has a chance to read. "Oh, you too?"
Rupert smiled. But that smile quickly turned into a grin. "Just a habit."
Rachel smiled. "Me too."
Soon after Mrs. Schwarz began the lesson, Rachel and Rupert made a great team together in the genetics project.
